The Tale of Kiều.
10 – The Generosity of spring.
(Lượng Xuân)
From verse 345 to verse 380.
Poem: Nguyễn Du (1766-1820).
Music: Vĩnh-Thiện Quách.
Voice: Hương Giang.
English Translation: Lê Xuân Thủy.

If your generosity remains indifferent to my love, shall I not have suffered enough in following you.
She listened silently, as though lulled by his words. Already uneasiness showed in the expression of her eyes, like spring shining over a pale autumn.
Everything seems new to me in this first meeting, Kiêu said, but I have too much mine. Since I am the cause of the trouble of your generous heart, I accept your words and I’ll carve them on gold and on forever.
Kim Trong felt his heart relieved at these words. He took out the gold pin and the silk handkerchief and handed them to her.
My life is united with yours from this very day, he said. May these modest pledges witness the words we have addressed each other.
At those moments Kiêu held in her hand an embroidered silk handkerchief and a fan with the pictures of turnsoles painted on it. Immediately she exchanged these objects for the gold pin. Their oath was thus made and they are linked to each other as if by glue and lacquer.
Suddenly, they seemed to hear a voice coming from the rear of the house. Like falling leaves and flowers, he hurried back to his books and she to her dressing-room.
Since then like a touchstone in full contact with pure gold, their love became more profound and their hearts seemed gloomy.
Though the Siang River was almost dried up, both were there, one waiting upstream and the other pining away for love downstream. Like snow and mist, they were kept apart by a high wall and had a lot of difficulties in exchanging their love messages.
Windy and moonlit nights succeeded each other alternately. Roses shoed more scarcely and more verdant grew the bushes. Spring seemed to be on the wane when the family of Kiêu’s mother celebrated the birthday of her grandfather.
Her parents and her younger sister and brother happily prepared their festival dresses. With a rich chosen gift, they went out to offer their sincere affection to their grandparent.
Lonesome in her deserted house adorned with orchidaceous, Thuy Kiêu thought that this was occasion for her to meet Kim. She managed to display many kinds of good things of the season on the table, then went out, with a quick step straight to the wall. Hardly had she raised her soft golden voice through the flowers when Kim was already there, standing under a flowery branch.

Lượng Xuân

Lượng Xuân dù quyết hẹp hòi,
Công đeo đuổi chẳng thiệt thòi lắm ru,
Lặng nghe lời nói như ru,
Chiều xuân dễ khiến nét thu ngại ngùng.
*

If any of its spring favours your heart does not grant me.
All the pains incurred in my constancy will be lost unfairly.
She attentively listened to these words so soothing.
And reflected in her limpid eyes were romantic feelings.
In this first encounter, said she, a little shy.
Moved by your heart, how could I suppress the voice of mine?
Since your noble heart has reserved for me that great favour.
I accept to engrave your promise on stone and gold for ever.
Upon these words, his heart was entirely relieved from grief.
He handed her the gold hairpin and the pink handkerchief.
Our centenary union starts from this moment.
To commemorate it, please accept these objects as a love token.
Kieu had in her hand a brocade handkerchief and a gold plated fan.
For the hairpin she promptly made the exchange.
This love engagement glued them firmly together.
Suddenly they heard human voices from behind the house of hers.
Making leaves and flowers fall, parted in a hurry.
Her, back to the finely room him, to his study.
Now as the touch stone knew the gold titter.
Deeper became their love and more intense their longing for each other.
On the Tuong river, that shallow watercourse of longing.
One person upstream, for the other downstream, was waiting.
Just a thin wall between them was lying.
But they seemed to be separated by a large expanse of snow and fog.
That hindered love messages in their travelling back and forth.
Windy days and moonlit nights went by one after the other.
Spring went away green became denser and red thinner.
Came an anniversary in her mother’s family.
Her parents and siblings dressed up excitedly.
Then left with offerings, token of their reverential regards.
Staying alone in the quiet and deserted house.
She thought this way a good opportunity for a meeting with him now.
After displaying fruits of the season on the table neatly.
Towards the wall she directed her lotus steps promptly.
On this side of the flowers she raised her gold voice sweetly.
Behind the flowers she saw him waiting there already.
