Tuần sau bổng thấy hai người,
Mách tin ý cũng liệu bài tâng công,
Tiểu thư nổi giận đùng đùng,
Gớm tay thêu dệt ra lòng trêu ngươi,
Chồng tao nào phải như ai,
Điều nầy hẳn miệng những người thị phi,
Vội vàng xuống lệnh ra uy,
Đứa thì vả miệng đứa thì bẻ răng,
Trong ngoài kín mít như bưng,
Nào ai còn dám nói năng một lời.

Buồng đào khuya sớm thảnh thơi,
Ra vào một mực nói cười như không,
Đêm ngày lòng những giận lòng,
Sinh đà về đến lầu hồng xuống yên,
Lời tan hợp nỗi hàn huyên,
Chữ tình càng mặn chữ duyên càng nồng,
Tẩy trần vui chén thong dong,
Nỗi lòng ai ở trong lòng mà ra,
Chàng về xem ý tứ nhà,
Sự mình cũng rắp lân la giãi bày.

Mấy phen cười nói tỉnh say,
Tóc tơ bất động mảy may sự tình,
Nghĩ đà bưng kín miệng bình,
Nào ai có khảo mà mình đã xưng,
Những là e ấp dùng dằng,
Rút dây sợ nữa động rừng lại thôi,
Có khi vui chuyện mua cười,
Tiểu thư lại giở những lời đâu đâu,
Rằng trong ngọc đá vàng thau,
Mười phần ta đã tin nhau cả mười.

Khen cho những chuyện dông dài,
Bướm ong lại đặt những lời nọ kia,
Thiếp dù vụng chẳng hay suy,
Đã dơ bụng nghĩ lại bia miệng cười,
Thấy lời thủng thỉnh như chơi,
Thuận lời chàng cũng nói xuôi đỡ đòn,
Những là cười phấn cợt son,
Đèn khuya chung bóng trăng tròn sánh vai,
Thú quê thuần hức bén mùi,
Giếng vàng đã rụng một vài lá ngô.
Chú giải :
Tẩy trần = rửa bụi.
Thuần = là một thứ rau.
Hức = là một loại cá.

La décade d’après, elle vit venir à elle deux personnes.
Qui lui apprirent tout dans un but apparemment intéressé.
La jeune femme entra dans une bruyante colère.
J’ai horreur dit-elle de ces calomniateurs qui manifestement veulent m’agacer.
Mon mari ne ressemble pas au premier venu.
Ce sont certainement des commérages.
Cela dit elle donna des ordres sévères à ses gens.
Aux uns de gifler les calomniateurs aux autres de leur arracher les dents.
Le silence se fit complet au-dedans et au dehors.
Personne ne broncha plus.
Dans la chambre rose, elle passa les nuits et les jours dans une quiète aisance.
Elle allait et venait de façon normale : parlait et riait gaîment comme si rien ne s’était passé.
Mais la colère couvait en elle nuit et jour.
Sur ces entrefaites son jeune époux arriva chez elle.
Des paroles qui exprimaient la joie du retour après une longue absence furent échangées ; on s’informa réciproquement de la santé.
Leur tendresse se fit plus vive et les séductions réciproques plus fortes.
Ils fêtèrent ensemble joyeusement ce retour heureux.
Quant à ce qui se passait dans leur cœur personne n’y a été pour le savoir.
Thuc Sinh après avoir sondé ainsi l’état d’esprit de sa femme.
Se préparait déjà à lui exposer ses affaires.
Mais au cours de plusieurs entretiens successifs qu’elle eût bu ou qu’elle fût lucide.
Il vit qu’elle ne faisait pas la moindre allusion à la situation.
Il pensa : J’ai bien caché les choses jusqu’à présent.
M’a-t-on interrogé ? Pourquoi dès lors ferais-je des aveux ?

Ils ont inventé des histoires de liaisons et ont parlé à tort et à travers.
Si je m’étais laissé persuader et si je n’avais pas pour habitude de réfléchir toujours avant d’agir.
J’en aurais conçu des idées ridicules et j’aurais été la risée du public.
A ce propos sans passion débité sur un ton tout naturel comme pour agrémenter simplement la conversation.
Il abonda aussi dans le même sens et trouva des mots faciles pour éviter les complications.
Et ils continuèrent à rire et à plaisanter ensemble au milieu des fards et des onguents.
Ils se partagèrent la lumière de la même lampe éclairant leur veillée et prolongèrent leur doux tête-à-tête sous la clarté de la pleine lune.
Il prit goût à cette vie douce de la campagne ; la chère frugale n’était pas sans charme.
Dans les puits de couleur jaune d’or étaient déjà tombées quelques feuilles de Ngô Dông.

After trying to sound out his wife’s inmost thoughts, the man prepared to expose his affairs. But many a time during their talk, she always cut in by laughing and speaking at random. Not the slightest hint of his love affair was implied in her words. This proves that the vase has been well bunged, Thuc rejoiced inwardly. Why make a confession without being examined? And he continued to weigh the pros and the cons and to keep silent lest all the forest might be shaken if he pulled at a liana.
