Lại còn khủng khỉnh làm cao thế nầy,
Nào là gia pháp nọ bay,
Hãy cho ba chục biết tay một lần,
Ả hoàn trên dưới dạ rân,
Dẫu rằng trăm miệng khôn phân lẽ nào,
Trúc côn ra sức đập vào,
Thịt nào chẳng nát gan nào chẳng kinh.

Xót thay đào lý một cành,
Một phen mưa gió tan tành một phen,
Hoa nô truyền dạy đổi tên,
Buồng the dạy ép vào phiên thị tì,
Ra vào theo lũ thanh y,
Dãi dầu tóc rối da chì quản bao,
Quản gia có một mụ nào,
Thấy người thấy nết ra vào mà thương,
Khi chè chén khi thuốc thang,
Đem lời phương tiện mở đường hiếu sinh.

Dạy rằng may rủi đã đành,
Liễu bồ mình giữ lấy mình cho hay,
Cũng là oan nghiệp chi đây,
Sa cơ mới đến thế nầy chẳng dưng,
Ở đây tai vách mạch rừng,
Thấy ai người cũ cũng đừng nhìn chi,
Kẻo khi sấm sét bất kỳ,
Con ong cái kiến kêu gì được oan,
Nàng càng giọt ngọc như chan,
Nỗi lòng luống những bàn hoàn niềm tây.

Phong trần kiếp đã chịu đầy,
Lầm than lại có thứ nầy bằng hai,
Phận sao bạc chẳng vừa thôi,
Khăng khăng buộc mãi lấy người hồng nhan,
Đã đành túc trái tiền oan,
Cũng liều ngọc nát hoa tàn mà chi,
Những là nương náu qua thì,
Tiểu thư phải buổi mới về ninh gia,
Mẹ con trò chuyện lân la,
Phu nhân mới gọi nàng ra dạy lời.

Tiểu thư dưới trướng thiếu người,
Cho về bến ấy theo đòi lầu trang,
Lĩnh lời nàng mới theo sang,
Biết đâu địa ngục thiên đàng là đâu ?
Sớm khuya khăn mặt lược đầu,
Phận con hầu giữ con hầu dám sai,
Phải đêm êm ả chiều trời,
Trúc tơ hỏi đến nghề chơi mọi ngày,
Lĩnh lời nàng mới lựa dây,
Nỉ non thánh thót dễ say lòng người.

Te voilà vendue à moi comme domestique.
Et tu fais encore la dédaigneuse et l’orgueilleuse comme cela.
Eh bien, où sont donc les gens commis au service d’ordre du palais ?
Qu’on lui donne pour commencer trente coups de rotin afin qu’elle sache une bonne fois comment je suis sévère. A cet ordre toutes ces servantes de la maison répondirent en chœur.
Eût-elle eu cent bouches que Kieu n’eût pu parvenir à s’expliquer.
Avec un bâton en bambou on la frappa très fort. Quelle chair eût pu endurer pareil traitement sans être meurtrie ? Quel courage eût-il fallu avoir pour n’avoir pas peur ? Pauvre rameau délicat de pêcher ou de prunier. Cette bourrasque la mit dans un état lamentable. On lui ordonna de changer son nom en celui de Hoa Nô. On la contraignit à servir comme femme de chambre.
Elle devait entrer et sortir avec les domestiques.
Elle fut réduite à une vie laborieuse et sans confort les cheveux en désordre et la peau hâlée.
Parmi le personnel il y avait une certaine gouvernante.
Qui remarquant les qualifiés que révélaient tous ses gestes en eut pitié.
Tantôt elle lui servait du thé tantôt elle lui donnait les soins nécessités par son état de santé.
Elle lui prodiguait des conseils de bon sens et cherchait à entretenir dans son cœur l’amour de la vie. Je conviens, lui dit-elle, qu’il y a des moments de chance et des moments de malchance.
Les créatures faibles et fragiles que nous sommes toutes doivent toujours faire les efforts requis pour se conserver.
Votre malheur présent est sans doute le châtiment de quelque crime commis dans une vie antérieure. Pour en être arrivée là vous devez être une victime prédestinée.
En ces lieux sachez que tous les murs ont des oreilles et des yeux.
Si parfois vous retrouvez de vieilles connaissances affectez de ne pas les reconnaître.
Sous peine d’encourir les foudres de la colère des maîtres.
La pauvre parmi que vous êtres ne pourrait même pas faire entendre son cri d’innocente.
Après avoir entendu cet avis Kieu répandit de nouvelles et abondantes larmes.
Elle se sentit davantage affectée des pénibles sentiments éprouvés.
J’étais déjà résignée à subir cet exil dans la vie infâme.
Je ne m’attendais pourtant pas à ce malheur deux fois plus atroce.
Pourquoi l’ingratitude du sort dépasse-t-elle à ce point mes forces ?
Pourquoi cet acharnement contre une créature qui n’a commis d’autre crime que celui d’avoir des joues roses ? Je dois donc me résigner à payer mes dettes des vies antérieures.
Il me faut m’abandonner à toutes les flétrissures sans récrimination aucune.
Ainsi elle fît ce qu’elle put pour subsister à travers les vastitudes.
La jeune femme de Thuc Sinh vint un jour faire visite à ses parents.
La conversation entre la mère et la fille roulait d’un sujet à l’autre.
Il vint un moment où la grande dame fît appeler la pauvre Kieu.
Il manque quelqu’un, lui-dit-elle, dans le personnel domestique de Madame.
Je t’autorise à aller chez elle comme servante intime. Conformément à cet ordre Kieu suivit la jeune dame chez elle. Sans savoir si elle allait en enfer ou au paradis.
Matin et soir elle eut pour attributions d’apporter et de ranger serviettes et peignes.
Résignée à cette condition de servante elle observa ses devoirs de servante sans jamais y manquer. Par une de ces nuits douces et calmes. La dame la questionna sur ses talents musicaux. Obéissant à l’ordre donné Kieu accorda son pipa.
Puis elle préluda semblait par des gémissements alternant avec des bruits cristallins de gouttes d’eau très émouvants.
